Francine In Retirement
Seeing Life Through Photography

I choose this photo below that I took in 2009 for the Friday Photo Challenge because it reminded me of the statue of Jesus sitting at the peak of the 2,300 Ft.  Corcovado Mountain located in the Tijuca Forest Nation Park overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro.  The statue called Christ the Redeemer is a symbol of Brazilian Christianity and has become an icon for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.

When I researched the above photo, I found some interesting facts unknown to me at the time.  Here is what I discovered.

In 1889 the first National Congress of Black Catholics convened in Washington D.C. to cry out for greater recognition in the church and to demand an end to racism.  Fr. Patrick McDermott of the Holy Ghost Order was inspired by this movement and thus encouraged his superiors to establish a Black mission in Pittsburgh.  Holy Ghost College, presently known as Duquesne University, responded by establishing Saint Benedict the Moor Parish on July 28, 1889.  The Parish’s vision was continuously focused on serving Black Catholics, encompassing a full range of struggles and triumphs.

On November 24, 1968, as a result of a monumental effort on the part of the parish, Bishop John J. Wright dedicated the famous landmark statue of Saint Benedict the Moor designed by noted artist Frederick Shrady.  In 1970, Fr. Augustus Taylor, Jr. was installed as the first African-American pastor in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and was assigned to Saint Brigid-Saint Benedict the Moor.  The statue is located across from what is known today as Freedom Corner, where it overlooks the downtown area of the city of Pittsburgh.

I am not a Catholic so this was surprising and welcoming news to me.  This is Black History Month in the United States so my entry for today has two purposes.  One purpose is to fulfill the Photo Friday Challenge and the other is to highlight and celebrate Black History month.
