WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE: TWO SUBJECTS

This weeks challenge with The Daily Post at WordPress is “Two Subjects“.

THE CATHEDRAL OF LEARNING

MARY SCHENLEY MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN – A SONG TO NATURE

The Cathedral of Learning, a Pittsburgh landmark[2][6] listed in the National Register of Historic Places,[7][8] is the centerpiece of the University of Pittsburgh‘s main campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Standing at 535 feet (>163 m),[9] the 42-story Late Gothic Revival Cathedral is the tallest educational building in the Western hemisphere and the second tallest university building (fourth tallest educationally-purposed building) in the world.[1

The Mary Schenley Memorial Fountain, also known as A Song to Nature, is a 1918 landmark public sculpture in bronze and granite by Victor David Brenner

The work of art comprises two major figures: a reclining Pan, the Greek god of shepherds, and above him a female singer playing a lyre. From crevices along the fountain’s rim four turtles spew water into the basin. An inscription on the pedestal reads, “A Song of Nature, Pan the Earth God Answers to the Harmony and Magic Tones Sung to the Lyre by Sweet Humanity.” The basin of the fountain is 15 feet high, above which the figures rise another 15 feet.

  16. interesting and the cathedral is looking awesome 🙂

  17. Beautiful images, Francine. Beaitiful features.

One of the greatest complaints of citizens where I live is that over the past decades, city council has embarked on urban revitalization projects that caused the elimination of old and cherished architecture, sculpture and historical landmarks for modern edifices that aren’t nearly as respected. There are now ambitious efforts by local factions to hang on to the paulty sum of historical sites that are left.

  18. Thanks Francine the photos you took of the University of Learning are really as if we are the lens of your camera. interesting thanks for the journey
