Francine In Retirement
Seeing Life Through Photography

Ah… the feeling of soft warm sand beneath the feet on a perfect summer day.  A makeshift shore along the Allegheny River served as a sandy relax-and-play area mimicking your best beach vacation destination.  The city of Pittsburgh provided a whopping 200 foot long coastline catering to the “beach” in us.

This beach, called The Kids Korner—a dedicated play area with sand toys, sea shells, some palm trees and tropical greenery to simulate that southern atmosphere and, of course, you were welcome to bring your own sun umbrellas and chairs to just chill out and soak in the rays at leisure.

The beach was there for all to enjoy during the five days the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta was in town.

  1. What a great idea for the City to do for its kids, many of whom are too poor to travel to a “real” beach. Every child should experience the joy of building a sand castle and of being buried in warm sand. 🙂

  2. There was/is something similar in Paris, sad they can’t keep it in Pittsburgh.

  3. Fun images that bring us back to a lot of happy childhood memories. My son would have love to play in this place. Have a great day!

  4. What a wonderful concept! Gilly is right, Paris has an annual ‘Paris Plage’ every summer with faux beaches along the Seine!

  5. The best times of your life.

  6. I love to see little children having fun on the beach, Francine. Happy pics. 😉

  7. What a great idea. And lovely photos …. remember how you have to get the sand “just right” (slightly damp) so it will hold together when you flip over and pull up the bucket? Sand Castle!

  8. I’ve known them to do this on a smaller scale on London’s South Bank, Francine. Love the intensity of the children turning out those sand pies- a serious occupation!

  9. This post just “feels” like summer! Nice pics! I enjoy and appreciate your blog so I’ve nominated you for the Reader Appreciation Award! Congratulations!! See more at 🙂

  10. Such a great image of summer! the construction of sand castles by children.
