Francine In Retirement
Seeing Life Through Photography

Yesterday I did a post called “WALK IN THE LIGHT.”  A fellow blogger, Lucid Gypsy, was intrigued by the walkway and wanted to know more about it.  Inspired by her comment and this also being Earth Week, a focus on a green environment, I present to you the environmentally smart “green” David L. Lawrence Convention Center

WHO IS g1?

g1 (greenfirst)® represents the David L. Lawrence Convention Center’s (DLCC) commitment to environmental sustainability.  Located in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the DLCC was the first “green” convention center in the world and was awarded the Gold (new building) and Platinum (existing building) LEED® certifications by the US Green Building Council. The DLCC was built green in 2003 and operates green today! To operate green: we recycle, we compost, we reduce toxic emissions, we reduce energy use, we operate a grey water reclamation plant, we use natural cool air, we grow vegetables & herbs, we use natural resources, we purchase green, we donate unwanted supplies, we think green first in everything we do!

The walkway, Convention Center Riverfront Plaza opened in May 2011. Creating a “delta” at the base of the Water Feature, the Plaza connects the Convention Center to Point State Park and The Strip District through the Three Rivers Heritage Trail along the Allegheny River.

Pittsburgh was named by National Geographic Traveler as one of the world’s top 20 great places to visit in 2012.  One of the reasons is its unique architecture including the environmentally-smart “green” David L. Lawrence Convention Center. This 1.5 million sq ft facility features 313,000 sq ft of exhibit space, 37 loading docks, 53 meeting rooms and a 31,000 sq ft ballroom.  To see more information on this building, click here.

The David L. Lawrence Convention Center was also home of the 2009 G20 Summit, hosted by President Barack Obama.
