CEE’S FUN FOTO CHALLENGE: LARGE SUBJECTS

ELEPHANTS

Elephants (Proboscidea) are a group of large herbivorous land mammals. There are three species of elephants alive today, the African savanna elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant.

ELEPHANT EARS

“Elephants, have huge ears relative to body size, and they are also used for temperature regulation. It has been shown that blood passing through the ears of an African elephant may lose as much as 9˚C of heat, a valuable cooling device in the hot African summer. To increase the effect, elephants spray their ears with water, and flap them to create cooling air currents.”

ELEPHANT NOSE AND TRUNK

Elephant trunks have multiple functions, including breathing, olfaction, touching, grasping, and sound production. The animal’s sense of smell may be four times as sensitive as that of a bloodhound. The trunk’s ability to make powerful twisting and coiling movements allows it to collect food, wrestle with conspecifics, and lift up to 350 kg (770 lb).  It can be used for delicate tasks, such as wiping an eye and checking an orifice, and is capable of cracking a peanut shell without breaking the seed. With its trunk, an elephant can reach items at heights of up to 7 m (23 ft) and dig for water under mud or sand. When gathering the material and my photos for this post I remembered the photo of Jimmy Durante that hangs in Carmines, a famous NYC restaurant, which was a frequent gathering place for former Hollywood legends.

Mr. Durante’s nickname was “Schnozzola” or “The Schnoz”.  A Yidish word for a huge nose.  This is usually a size that is way beyond normal.

So I will end this post with Jimmy Durante’s Radio and TV shows sign off.

“Goodnight Mrs Calabash Wherever You Are?”

Go to Cee’s Photography for more images of the Fun Foto Challenge of Large Subjects.

BE ENCOURAGED!  BE BLESSED!
